Radon Information

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of naturally occurring uranium in soil and rock.  It is odorless and tasteless, and can only be detected by specialized testing.  Radon enters the home through openings that are in contact with the ground, such as cracks in the foundation, openings around pipes and sump pits.  Radon is estimated to cause over 20,000 lung cancer deaths per year, according to the EPA’s 2003 Assessment of Risks from Radon in Homes (EPA402-R-03-003).

The EPA Recommends

Test your home for radon.  It is easy and inexpensive.  Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher.  Radon levels less than 4 picoCuries still pose a risk, and in many cases may be reduced.

Testing

All Sure Home Inspections, LLC performs a short term test (Activated Charcoal Canister) that lasts between 2-3 days.  During the test and 12 hours prior you must close your windows and outside doors and keep them closed as much as possible.  During the test you can operate your heating and air-conditioning system fans that re-circulate the indoor air, but you can not operate fans or machines which bring in air from outside.  Fans that are a part of the radon-reduction system or small exhaust fans operating only for short periods of time may run during the test.  If your result is 4pCi/L or higher, take a follow-up test to be sure the reading is accurate.  If both tests come back elevated, it is recommended that you contact a state licensed Radon Mitigation Specialist.
